What’s your favourite album and song ever?
I don’t have a favourite album but I have lots of favourite songs, among them ‘Ziggy Stardust’ by David Bowie, Nirvana’s cover of ‘The Man Who Sold the World’, ‘Superstar’ by Sonic Youth, ‘The Good Old Days’ by The Libertines and ‘Trying Your Luck’ by The Strokes. I love The White Stripes and Rolling Stones in a big way as well.
What was the best year for music?
Probably before I was born.
What is your earliest musical memory?
Going off to ballet class when I was three years old. Sorry that’s not very rock ’n’ roll.
Is there any particular album or song you never want to hear again in your life?
Vengaboys’ ‘5 6 7 8’. I just remember hating that song with a passion when I was about nine (was that not by Steps? – Europop expert Ed).
If you could go back in time which musical figure would you like to meet?
Jimmy Hendrix, without a doubt.
Who would you put in your fantasy band?
Jimi Hendrix on guitar, Fab Morretti on drums, Mick Jagger vocals, bassist Nikolai Fraiture. I think that would work, maybe? And maybe throw in Marilyn Monroe on vocals as well. Actually that wouldn’t work but it would look good.
What is the best gig you have ever been to?
That’s an impossible question. Perhaps The Strokes in Memphis, Tennessee in 2006. Recently I went to a bunch of low-key Bloody Social gigs in Manhattan and I loved them as well, all smoky and debauched. Also when I first moved to London I went to Transgressive’s Basement Club, it was a secret Magic Numbers gig, and in the queue and then the crowd I met a few boys I’m still very close to now, including my editor, Tom Hannan. So that was very important to me.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Feeder in Dundee, Scotland. I can’t even remember how old I was but I was wide-eyed and addicted immediately.
What was the last gig you went to and how was it?
Jamie T, The Eraserheads and Rum Shebeen at Maxilla.
CD, Vinyl or MP3?
Vinyl of course.
John or Paul?
I think I’d like to hang out with Paul just a little more.
East Coast or West Coast?
At the moment, New York City is very fun, so East Coast.
Dylan or Elvis?
Dylan, always.
