Former Ladytron member and all round space cadet Pop Levi (that’s his real name) returns with this his ‘difficult’ second album, after the much-acclaimed debut The Return To Form Black Magick Party. On listening to this though, my first thoughts are that the words ‘difficult second album’ don’t really exist in the Pop Levi vocab.
With seventies handclaps aplenty and more than a hint of Marc Bolan about many of the songs, this is fizzing synth pop meets astral folk funk (did I really just say that?).
Opening track ‘Wannamama’ explodes like a twenty first century T-Rex on pills, and the adrenalin-fueled electro-pop mayhem continues from there. While the high-octane pace slackens occasionally for more laid back songs like ‘Semi-Babe’, ‘You Gotta Run’ and ‘Mai’s Space’, the catchiness remains. Like a shiny glimpse back at all that was good about the 70s and 80s, with a sneaky 90s twist… If you’re gonna get one party record for summer 2008, make this it!
