With Camden’s Proud Galleries being something of a spiritual home for the style conscious and skinny jeaned it seems a surprising venue for the Levellers to be playing a new album teaser at.
However diversely dressed the crowd was (PG and Levellers regulars both being in abundance), it was unified, sweating and bouncing as the band, in aid of the Big Issue it should be noted, raced through their best known numbers, such as ‘Beautiful Day,’ and ‘One Way,’ early on even if they were ‘loathe’ to play them at what was effectively an intimate introduction to their new album.
As a whole set it was still seamless though, their new material (album Letters From The Underground is out in August) is unmistakable in its source, though possibly marks, in both its dirtier folk-rock sound and its reliance on overtly political content, a return to what might be considered the core values of a band who latterly in their 20 years together have become more accustomed to packing arenas. But evidently on this performance they are still very capable of scaling down their show to do something pretty special in a small arena.
