Album Review - Soeza: 7 Obstacles
Gringo Records

by Oliver Downes, first published in LondonTourdates #026 ,11th July 2008

Soeza are a six piece hailing from Bristol and form part of the broader Pull The Strings collective. Their third album is a bit of a mixed bag in many respects, at times straining to breaking point with jarringly disparate ideas before snapping back into cool-eyed coherency.

Soeza certainly aren’t shy of dabbling around to see what works: additive rhythms provide the metric structure more often than not, different threads of sound are overlaid at different tempos and unusual instrumentation – most notably harmonised French horns – compete with the guitars for attention.

While Ben Owen’s furious declamations at times grate, at others they are accompanied by a synchronous assault from the guitars and drums to build an insistent vitality. His hoarse spiels are amply contrasted with Jenny Robinson’s clear voice – indeed, the band sounds its best when they keep the frenetic experimentation to the minimum and allow her to sail above the bedlam. When it works, it’s rather sweet, but probably isn’t for everyone.
