Live Review - Sunset Rubdown
Luminaire22 May 2008

by Richard Davie, first published in LondonTourdates #024 ,13th June 2008

Originally a solo side-project of Spencer Krug’s while he was seeking distraction from Wolf Parade and other projects, the very positive response the LPs received on release seems to have snowballed into the formation of an actual band for the Sunset Rubdown vehicle. Via stops at ATP and a handful of other UK dates, those present at the Luminaire got to witness their London début.

Given the highly-saturated musical palette and near-hysterical levels of urgency in much of Krug’s delivery on the latest record, curiosity was piqued by how, or if, they could retain their distinctive sound live without descending into aural mud; or would they have to scale back somewhat?

The answer, for the most part, was to find a compromise somewhere between.

With the exception of the pre-encore finale of ‘Mending Of The Gown’, which positively shimmered with the off-kilter spark that makes it such a giddy delight, the set veered towards the more measured of his back-catalogue. Less divisive than the albums, but less bombastic too, this was a humanisation of the music, and yet another reminder that Krug is a disgracefully fecund well of material worth a first, second and third look.
