Album Review - Eugene Francis Jr: The Golden Beatle
Genepool

by Richard Swales, first published in LondonTourdates #024 ,13th June 2008

When the artist is riding a giant dog and is clad in an outfit that makes him look like a mix between Dan Dare and an American Indian chieftain on the front cover then you expect something highly unconventional to be contained within. I was surprised then when what hit my ears was amazingly radio-friendly, melodic British indie-pop of the highest calibre.

Mr. Francis Jr., a veteran of the London indie scene having played in many bands since relocating from Wales, clearly has an ear for a pop hook; the effectiveness of which is helped by his delivery which sits somewhere close to Wayne Coyne’s, while never quite reaching the heady, surreal heights of the Flaming Lips man.He clearly knows what he’s up to; the music is rich and deep with more things popping up with every listen and nothing out of place. This is a fantastically chilled, amazingly stylized and thoroughly pleasant début; the perfect accompaniment to a Sunday morning hangover.
