At once true to its roots and genre hopping, the latest release from the prolific Zion Train is an impressive effort. These twin facets represent this record’s greatest strength and, conversely, its downfall.
Outwardly political tracks address climate change and the Iraq war whereas lead single ‘Give Me Good Sensi’ is such a stereotypical ‘aren’t drugs great’ song as to be heavily cringe-worthy.
Still, the live horn sections are a delight throughout, cruising from traditional dub style through a heavy Latin American influence and out the other side again.
The production is spot on, the bass-lines deep and effective and the use of no less than seven different vocalists keeps the listener interested throughout the duration of the (slightly excessive) 16 tracks.
Nothing particularly innovative here but then nothing offensive either.
