The trouble with instrumental albums is that there are no lyrics. There are no easy footholds or pontification plateaux to perch upon, and so we have to dream up all kinds of philosophical nonsense based on the album cover, or the band name.
Well, ignore that load of rubbish, let’s talk about this for what it is - a very good album. The two band members, Kevin O’Connor (a multi-instrumentalist and staggeringly emotive drummer) and Lisa Molinaro (a wonderful string musician) craft an album which brings to mind Four Tet, Bjork and Múm, with some wonderful organic music, sometimes edged with folktronic beats and samples.
The album is best understood in its entirety: it starts gently, creeps up on you like Wile E. Coyote, then bursts out, pounding with energy and cathartic release.
There is so much melody and emotion here, the lack of human vocals is barely noticeable.
