Raul Midon, according to The Guardian, “redefines the whole notion of what ‘good’ means.” But just how has he accomplished such a revolutionary etymological feat? Firstly, he has adopted the highly original approach of being highly unoriginal.
The lyrics are fairly banal - his first words verge on downright strange: “I don’t wanna be nobody’s fool / And I don’t wanna take no one to school” - and the music is just textbook soul/R’n’B which has been done better countless times.
Granted, Midon has a good voice, which in a live setting would almost certainly prove soulful and touching; however on his sophomore album it is as glossy and smooth as a marble sculpture, positioned front and centre as the unashamed main attraction, something which actually diminishes its impact.
I suppose The Guardian could be right, in its distinct averageness Raul Midon really does redefine the meaning of ‘good’.
