Nick Bracegirdle, a.k.a. Chicane, fresh from Glastonbury, is ready for a third bite at the cherry despite setbacks such as his last album being leaked on the net - meaning it never received a full release.
Having enjoyed collaborations in the past with Bryan Adams and Clannad’s Marie Brennan, the big name on Somersault is Tom Jones, who appears on opening track ‘Stoned In Love’.
Bracegirdle has always seen himself as “songwriter not DJ” and has said this disc is Chicane’s evolution from dance into something rockier. That’s evident on ‘Come Tomorrow’ (the imminent first single and an absolute cracker), ‘Far Away From You’ and ‘Turning Corners’, which is squelchy beat-powered Nirvana.
Elsewhere there are Asian influences on ‘Always’ and classic Chicane in action on ‘Arizona’ – a Jean Michel Jarre-esque throwback - and ‘Nothing’, a soaring chillout anthem. But this album’s ‘Offshore’ (Chicane’s classic 90s hit) is without doubt ‘Way I’m Feeling’.
