Arguably one of the world's most popular bands, Green Day formed in 1987 when Billie Joel Armstrong (guitar, vocals) and Mike Dirnt (bass, vocals) started playing guitar together as teens. Since then, their eight studio albums have propelled them to pop-punk superstar status. Songs such as 'Basket Case', 'Minority' and 'Time of Your Life' have cemented the band with a place in the alternative music hall of fame. The band has sold over 65million records worldwide, and continue to sell out stadiums and arenas throughout the globe. Second album 'Kerplunk' gave the band an underground success, but 1994's 'Dookie' was their real breakthrough. 'American Idiot' took the band in a political direction in 2004, though the band was criticised for singing about anti-American issues. However they remain an immensely popular band the world over, and recently had a cameo role in The Simpsons Movie. Picture by Lloyd Morgan.
