First of the Stygian is the evolutionary result of one man's quest to form a metal band that defied the trends and ignored the boundaries of the genre.
The story of the band began in 2004 when Viperstrike bassist/vocalist and last remaining founder member, Tyrone Leigh Williams, became bored of playing covers with Viperstrike and decided to write his own music. Although this music would never be played in Viperstrike it became the seed that would eventually grow into the band that would eventually replace Viperstrike.
The fact that the music being written was beyond the scope of what Viperstrike would play forced Tyrone to find another outlet for his music and hence the First of the Stygian side project was born. Originally intended as a one off concept album, First of the Stygian finally developed into a full band in early 2007 when, after a long string of line up changes, Viperstrike was once more reduced to two members after Liam Toozer decided to leave the band to pursue his own musical agenda.
The decision was made to finally bury Viperstrike and bring guitarist Dave W. Preston on board the First of the Stygian project. The songs that Dave, Liam and Tyrone had written together for Viperstrike were added to the existing First of the Stygian backlog and the quest began to find a band that could play the progressive power thrash that would become the band's sound.
It didn't take long to find a bassist after a chance encounter with former Viperstrike guitarist Trefor Farrimond led Tyrone to make contact with James Macdonald. A drummer however was much harder to find.
Tyrone, Dave and James worked relentlessly for the year 2007 to write an E.P. and debut album while auditioning a number of drummers who never made it into the band. Tired of waiting for a drummer, the band enlisted the help of Simon from Axe to Grind to record two of the tracks from the E.P. in Jan 2008.
Now work begins on finalising the remaining E.P. tracks ready for release later in 2008.
