EARLY DAYS
In the late 80s and 90s, alt.blues/roots musician and songwriter Craig Hughes developed his acoustic blues chops as a street musician - lots of miserable, cold, wet busking from Glasgow through Central Scotland to the Edinburgh Festival and back - while fronting various alternative rock bands.
LIVE ALT.BLUES/ROOTS 2006 - 2008
The success of a couple of solo acoustic gigs in 2005 led to a support slot with Tony McPhee of The Groundhogs and the opportunity to record a demo EP in Dublin. The demo was well received and led to gigs in the USA (in 2006 and 2007), as well as at venues and Americana promotions across Glasgow (venues include The Captain's Rest, The Grand Ole Opry, MacSorley's, Blackfriars, Bacchus and The Pandora - promotions include [We Are]Fuzzy Felt Folk and Don't Mess With Texas), sharing the bill with such stalwarts of the Glasgow scene as Dave Arcari, Doghouse Roses and Hugh Reed, as well as Black River Bluesman & The Croaking Lizard from Finland and Dublin's 13 Conditions.
Festival appearances include Bloom'N'Blues, Altus, Arkansas U.S.A. (2006 & 2007), The Oxjam Ashton Lane Folk Festival, Glasgow 2007 and two dates at The Glasgow International Jazz Festival (Blues On The River) 2009.
THAT DEVIL MUSIC
In 2008 Craig began hosting That Devil Music, a monthly alt.blues'n'country gig in Glasgow. After a successful run at MacSorley's, TDM became an all-acoustic affair at The State Bar. The night has seen Craig sharing the bill with alternative roots artists from across Scotland and Europe.
RECORDINGS
Recently released on Channel Nowhere: the five-song EP Broke, Lonely and Guilty and the ltd. ed. single Hope It Makes You Happy.
Since 2007, Craig has provided original music for several short films and is currently scoring his first feature.
COMING UP IN 2009
2009 promises to be a very busy one, with the recent releases of the EP and single to be followed by an album release and UK tour later in the year. The album was recorded at Glasgow's Audio Experiments studio in June and is currently in the mixing and mastering stages. Also in the works is more soundtrack work, festival bookings and the ongoing promotion of That Devil Music @ The State Bar.
