Bang Bangs

How to mend a broken heart: step 1- form a band.

Matt Smith (vocals, guitar) watches as his girlfriend runs off with the boyfriend of fellow singer and bassist Sarah Clark. Dealing with such events in the only way they could, Matt and Sarah formed Bang Bangs.

Two years on and two become four, locked together in a maelstrom union, playing like this unholy, ungodly world has nothing to offer but this. Maybe memories of deceitful lovers still hang heavy. Maybe such intense performances are the only thing they’re made for.

Bang Bangs are a gang and they play like a gang- the sort of gang you wish you were in. With their boy/girl line up and three-minute wonders of melody, feedback and fuzz, it’s easy to draw comparisons to Sonic Youth and Pixies. But these are no sound-a-like, copy-cat revivalists- the furious energy and boy/girl vocal exchanges of Bang Bangs make them a thrillingly original experience.

Matt Smith is a melodic vocalist with explosive stage presence, screaming dark tales of love and violence straight from the Jeffrey Lee Pierce (Gun Club) school of music. Counterpart Sarah Clark’s vocals are the perfect foil, adding passion, depth and dynamism- driven by the furious drumming of Tom Lynam and intricate fretwork of David Russell, Bang Bangs take you down a pounding, guitar screaming alley of melodic hooks laced with underlying menace.

So, where to next? The venues of Camden, Birmingham, Liverpool, Brighton and the other usual suspects have already been conquered. Bang Bangs are looking towards bigger stages. Their debut album recording is underway and track ‘In Arms’ is featured on the Independents Day 08 album alongside the likes of The Prodigy, Maximo Park and The Cribs. The band was recommended for the ID08 project by Grant Nicholas from Feeder and Sarah provided backing vocals on the new Feeder album ‘Silent Cry’.

‘In Arms’ is available to buy on itunes now - view the spectacular promo video for this below. The band are also supplying another track 'Opposite Ends' for upcoming feature film 'The Pool' (David Morrissey) and recently received airplay on BBC Bristol, Xtreme Radio (Las Vegas, NV) and a glowing review in the Independent newspaper.

Word is spreading. The fan base is rapidly growing. And the message is getting out – whispered, yes, but insistent and infectious- Bang Bangs are coming .

best industry quotes

  1. our engineer introduced me to the Bang Bangs. They are just a really cool band, they've got some great songs : Grant Nicholas (Feeder)
  2. The boy-girl combo have a lot more in common with Americans like the Walkmen and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs than anyone on the contemporary English scene. Despite the odd foray into shouty vocals and an almost incessant wall of ferocious guitar playing, Bang Bangs haven't forgotten that at the heart of all decent music lies a keen sense of melody. Live, they are urgent and angry. Just don't expect a smile - GigsonAir
  3. The band's dark and surreal lyrics often form winding narratives... this, combined with their intense live performances, is showing them to be a genuinely exciting talent; too strange for the mainstream, too infectious for obscurity - Surface Unsigned Magazine
