Originating in 2005 as a three piece punk band Space Armstrong provide a refreshing break from the heavily Indie orientated music scene we face today. Founded by Danny (lead guitar and vocals) and Ant (bass and backing vocals) as a bit of the fun, the band has gradually built up its members into the 5 piece ska/punk band they are today. The addition of three brass instruments – sax (Kiers) and trombone (Sam) - to the more traditional drums (Jonno), bass and guitar, help to give the band their individual and energetic punk/ska sound.
At a recent gig in Manchester, the band played an immense set, including songs such as; ‘I’m Not The Person’ and ‘Drunk Off Destruction’. They created a buzzing atmosphere after which they were talent spotted, and are now supporting Bad Manners (a big ska band from the ‘80’s) on some of their dates in February. With heavy ‘Less Than Jake’ influences, and yet their own unique sound they stand out from a lot of rock bands, and are definitely worth seeing live. They interact well with the audience, and just enjoy themselves. Despite all still being at Aquinas College, the band are squeezing in as many gigs as possible, and writing/recording as much as time will allow for an album they’re currently working on. They hope that the summer break will allow them to focus on the band’s future an allow them to get things moving further.
The name ‘Space Armstrong’ has an unusual provenance, deriving from their sci-fi enthusiasm it was suggested by a friend at high school amongst a hail of other random names, it sounded alright and so it stuck. The theme of science fiction can also be seen in the video they are currently shooting which is said to involve “Danny’s car flying through space" according to Sam, although the rest of the band weren’t so sure. “It’s basically just what we get up to behind the scenes, with some gig footage and us writing and recording. Just something to make the experience a little more entertaining.” Informed Danny who is still a bit unsure of what planet Sam actually lives on. Once finished, the video will be posted on ‘You Tube’ and on their ‘Myspace’ (myspace.com/spacearmstrong) where you can also find more information about their upcoming gigs and song releases. With their original music, obvious talent and down to earth attitude this band could go far.
