These five young rock gods from the Cotswolds continually surprise and excite their audiences. Formed in September 2004 as ‘Devious Steve’, the band soon built up an enthusiastic following in the local area, playing original guitar rock tracks with the flavour of old classics, mixed with their own unique funky sound. In the summer of 2005 they entered a regional school ‘battle of the bands’ competition and won the right to appear on the Riverside Stage at the Oxford Cornbury Festival. The acclaim they won there inspired them to concentrate on developing, recording and performing their unique brand of original material in an attempt to reach as wide an audience as possible. They have not stopped since and their songwriting has been prolific. Souljacker are influenced by a mix of 70’s bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Jimi Hendrix and current bands like Opeth and Clutch. Throw in a touch of high-energy Funk and a lot of soul and you’ve got the essence of Souljacker. They are creative and mischievous and their technique and range is astonishing, from ‘balls out the bathtub’ rock ‘n’ roll to high-energy jazz-funk, ‘lighters out’ soulful tunes, even to reggae - and back again. The live shows are precise, punchy, entertaining and exhilarating. Articulate front man Patch Burley engages the crowd with a maturity beyond his years whilst belting out soulful vocals like an old pro. Original Souljacker tracks such as 'Jimmy Page Drank My Tea', 'Soul Money' and 'Naked' are turning into classics in their own right and ‘Eat My Dust’ was Lemonrock’s mp3 of the week in May 2008. Souljacker were voted the best unsigned band for March 2008 by Ultimate Guitar and were Lemonrock’s Band of the Week in May 2008. Souljacker is a band that means business and although still only 18 & 19 years old, as a unit they’re energetic, very very tight and sound like they’ve been playing for decades.
The band is currently busy writing and rehearsing as much new material as possible whilst still taking every opportunity to perform in public. The results so far have been impressive. Souljacker have set crowds alight at venues ranging from the dark, heated hothouse of the HAMMERSMITH PALAIS, to the pastoral CORNBURY MUSIC FESTIVAL and RAGGED HEDGE FAIR; but they are equally at home at smaller venues such as the Jericho Tavern in Oxford or Birmingham's Mono Bar. These guys just like playing!
