Paul Wiffen
"Solo piano/orchestral music from the man Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Vangelis, Paul McCartney, Jean-Michel Jarre, Hans Zimmer and most recently Embrace have used as sound designer and arranger. Guest female vocalists like Simone Kaye and Vanessa White-Smith add an extra texture on the songs which Paul has written/co-written with them. Paul's gigs have full audio/visual accompaniement as well with his specially shot video projected on screens behind him."
Having studied piano since the age of 5, Paul became fascinated with synthesis and sampling in the 80s using the technology to develop realistic orchestral and ambient textures which became in demand with some of the biggest names in the industry, Vangelis (on Blade Runner and 1492), Hans Zimmer (on his early film scores), and Paul McCartney (Spies Like Us). His pure synthesis work was used by Ultravox (Legend album, Love's Great Adventure single), Geoff Downes (Buggles, Yes, Asia) and Jean-Michel Jarre (on the Rendezvous, Revolutions and Waiting for Cousteau albums and at the Docklands and La Defense concerts). He worked as a Sound Designer on 2 Stevie Wonder albums and toured all over the world with Stevie for almost 2 years, which then led to similar work with Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones. Most recently Paul helped out Peter Gabriel with sounds and Mac configurations for his two most recent records. In the 90s, Paul was at the forefront of hard disk technolgies which revolutionized first audio and then video recording and editing. He assisted at the 5.1 remixes of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Sting's Brand New Day and The Doobie Brother's Long Train Running and then worked for Apple for a couple of years as an evangelist for these technologies. He now shoots and edits his own films (one of which won an award in Cannes this year), with BBC referring to him recently as the British answer to Robert Rodriguez. This references the fact that he scores all his own films as well as shooting and editing them. But he has also been commissioned by other directors to score their films and examples of both can be found on this website. In recent years, he has been co-writing and arranging with vocalists like Simone Kaye and Cathy Stocker to move beyond the purely instrumental sound of his earlier work and this has also allowed his accomplishments on the guitar and other instruments to shine through. He is also a full-time member of Fire In The South, "a new force in British Prog-Rock" where his talents as a sound designer are called on as much as his undoubted skills as a keyboard player. The Sunday Night Music Sessions which he has been running on a Sunday night with long-term friends drummer Dave Stark and multi-instrumentalist/producer Martyn Phillips give him a chance to rock out in a way that many who are only familiar with his classical music might not suspect.
