Lisa Theunissen
"HerStory is like eating chocolate in a smoky blues bar at midnight"
Lisa Theunissen (pronounced ‘Tennyson’) is a South African born singer-songwriter, and made the UK her home ten years ago. Over this time Lisa has honed her songwriting skills and developed her stagecraft; performing at a number of well-known venues on the London and South East England circuit, making a name for herself and gaining the respect within the music industry and from musicians and songwriters along the way.

In 2007, Lisa decided make music her full-time career by recording a debut album, forming a band, playing more live shows and preparing to embark on the long, hard road to wider recognition on her journey to success.

* Lisa was nominated for nominated 'Best Pop Rock Act' in the Exposure Music Awards (sponsored by TourDates.co.uk).
* Independently releasing the debut album, HerStory, in May 2008 via electronic distribution through http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/theunissen on iTunes: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playListId=278657583 and physical distribution for Amazon achieved critical acclaim, was featured by Amazon in June in their list of 'New and Emerging Artists for 2008' and achieved some good sales.
* Off to a flying start, HerBand was then invited to play GuilFest 2008 and Vivienne Westwood generously sponsored her designs. This first major ticket festival was a big success with three performances over the weekend, which were well received resulting in new fans and interest from radio, promoters and press.
* Since GuilFest 2008, HerBand have supported Never The Bride, played at The Pigalle Club and various summer festivals, and Lisa scored a nomination for 'Best Female Solo Artist' at the Guildford Brits Awards, from her local area.

The latter part of 2008 is set to be busy writing and recording a second album, as well as performing with HerBand. Plans are still in motion for announcing release dates of the singles, album and nation-wide tour, supported by press and radio appearances.

best industry quotes

  1. Inspired by traditional sixties soul and the modern pop stylings of Christina et al, Lisa Theunissen (remember, it's pronounced 'Tennyson'!) cites her primary ambition as a musician as being 'what Diane Warren is to songwriting and what Aretha Franklin is to performing', and she and her piano seem to be well on their way to realising that dream! ents24.com
  2. "Her lyrics are heartfelt, her sound is full of rhythm and her voice is silky-smooth - a grittier and more soulful Norah Jones." Charlotte Talbot, Woking Review Newspaper, 5 July 2008, HerStory, Debut Album Review: Soulful Answers to Life's Ups and Downs

  1. "This excellent singer/songwriter/keyboard artist from South Africa really hit the spot with the rest of us as well, with her country ballads and rock songs and her great voice." Peter Coulston
  2. "What struck me immediately was her astonishing voice. It’s as rich and sultry as a smoky blues lounge but simultaneously raw and emotional; bare as a room stripped of everything but the grand piano."
  3. "I had a listen just for the "chocolate in a smoky blues bar at midnight" line, and for once the headline is true - that's exactly what this is like. It isn't jazz, but anyone who likes jazz should ap
